Pitch

For this level, our intention was to transcribe a mountain hike in a canyon. We decided to base our level on four main axes : the use of physics for our puzzles, aquatic passages and climbing for the platform moments, and finally, allow a lot of shortcuts that the player can take if he has a great control of his character.

Context

This Level was made with three other game design students in a one month period. It was the first time I had to make a level on a 3d platformer game, so it was the perfect moment to experiment and try new ideas. The Level was created for one player, with a duration of 10 minutes. On this project, I worked almost every time with the whole team.

My work

We started by defining our intentions for the level. We wanted our level to feel like a hike in a canyon so we first thought about what kind of level design situations would be great with that intention. So we chose four main axes : The use of physics, aquatic passages, climbing and to allow a lot of shortcuts. We first made some paper design, using Miro, an online whiteboard that you can edit with a lot of people at the same time. After that, we built the level in Unity, and test it a lot. We found playtesters to gather feedback on our level, to improve it. We made plenty of iterations. At the end, I made some level building to improve the player immersion. I added rocks, grass, some panels to show that you're on a hike… I also reinforced signalisation by using various decorative elements.

Conclusion

This was the first level I created on a 3D game, it still has some flaws, but we are proud of the result we have. We published our level on Steam and we got a lot of positive feedback on it!
